Day One
We kicked off the rally yesterday after months of anticipation! It was a long first day with a very early start from Folkestone as we headed for the Eurotunnel. We all arrived safe and sound in Metz around 18.30 (Team AA arrived last, despite having Sat Nav!) Here’s an update on how each team made it through day one:
Team Anglia did better than they did back in 2007 (BEN Trafalgar to Red Square Rally) - they completed day 1 without losing their exhaust! However they did have a small problem with a cat…
The cat then hitched a ride with Team Metro - their tip of the day is “don’t follow Team Anglia”! Fellow ralliers beware!

Team BEN nearly had to be towed due to misplacing their keys. Usual story of one blames the other - in this case, I was to blame!
Team Honda made it with no dramas, but did get a little wet.
Team AA started the day on a continental breakfast, in England! Where was the full English?? Within just 30 minutes of arriving in France, Team AA had already lost two key members (John and Brian) who decided to head to Dusseldorf.
Thankfully, we were all reunited by mid morning. An AA representative said “the rest of the morning was uneventful!”
After lunch we had a change of drivers/riders. The mini was still no faster with a lighter driver.
The Harley Davidson has been renamed ‘YMCA’ due to its effeminate rider!
Team Benfield, aka “The Likely Lads”, persevered through the day with no air conditioning, necessitating a detour into Luxembourg centre to find the nearest bar for a swift, cool beer. They had good fuel economy from their 5 litre V8 – only one mile per gallon less than Robert & Rosie’s Metro, apparently!
Team DB4 opened the toolbox for the first time today and very much hoping it is the last time! Not getting lost, nor being late, makes it a very successful day!
Team Mazda arrived safe and sound.
All in all, a fantastic first day!
