Day 8
Team AA
After a fantastic night in Florence (What a city!!), Team AA educated Team Aston on the ways of the world and team Aston educated the AA on culture and history. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
We left the hotel on time to head to Maranello after Judy taking the odd wrong turn we arrived at the Ferrari factory. We arrived at the factory to a wonderful lunch provided by Ferrari then on to a tour of the museum. The museum has a great selection of classic and modern Ferraris. Team AA’s favourite was the 246 Dino. Nick took the chance to test drive the Team Honda’s ST1300, shortly after the heavens opened and we were advised by Nick that the AA’s Pan 1100 kept him dryer in the rain!!
We were stunned to see the guest appearance of the Stig, (Rumour has it was the infamous JJ Foster but we were unable to confirm this although a tash was seen) who promptly stole the keys to BEN’s Fiat 500, he then made a spirited show around the Ferrari car park much to the delight of the crowd assembled outside the museum. A lot of people were not sure of who or what the Stig was, but they were educated by the AA Team as to who Mr Shoemaker was (as revealed on Top Gear this week!!).
Team AA split for the afternoon with the slow side taking the Mille-Miglia route and the quicker vehicles (including team Tractor) enjoying a quick visit to Lake Garda. A light salad and ice cream lunch was taken and then back to the Hotel. The slower team took in an afternoon snack at a Chinese Italian snack bar where the language barrier fell apart again. Early night for the long haul to Metz via Switzerland.
Team Honda
Went in convoy up to Ferrari and had a great time looking at the wonderful cars. Afterwards, we left with Team Aston, Team Metro, and Team Porsche and went along the scenic Mille Miglia route, a minor glitch meant that the teams had to adjourn to a local pub to discuss progress, but with the help of a hugely gesticulating Italian lady, the correct route was found.
We had problems finding the hotel, which seem to disappear the closer we got to it. But in the end, despite the melted sat nav, we made it to the bar to much relief. Brilliant day riding, as always and thoroughly enjoyable. Particularly impressed by the speed of Team Metro, who very nearly exceeded the speed limit.
Team Anglia
As would be expected, Team Anglia dressed for the visit to the Ferrari Museum by wearing Ford T-shirts. Team Anglia was successful in preventing the Stig from ragging the car around the car park, as he did with the Fiat. Team Anglia didn’t think he could cope with the power, as he is only used to minis.
Team Anglia are pleased with how the car is coping with the heat, as they previously experienced problems on the Russia trip. Much banter was had over the two-way radios with the AA Teams.
Team Metro
We had a great day, exceeded the speed limit to the shock of all the other teams. Sadly technology let team Metro down with no sign of Judy chasing the fault. Team Aston’s and Team Honda’s sat nav caused the team to resort to an old fashioned map. Miraculously, team Metro arrived at the Hotel with team Honda and Team Aston following the trusty Metro into the car park
Team DB4
Today was our day. Enzio momentarily rolled over in his grave, as the DB4 smoothly and elegantly rolled into the Ferrari Galleria. Our colleague’s blogs indicate the influence team DB4 had today.
Team Benfield
Arrived at enemy camp, Maranello, home of Ferrari. They’d even reserved parking right by the entrance to the Ferrari museum. Our afternoon comprised a wild good chase around Cremona, before motoring up to Brescia marking the end of the Mille Miglia. On to Bergamo for our overnight stop.
