Day Five – Rimini to Spoleto
Team DB4
“A heavenly day! Leaving the hubbub of Rimini, the journey up to San Mario was a gem, with a wonderful winding, steep climb up to RSM. A quick expresso, and then the Aston was off into Umbria – roaring through stunning scenery, sunflower fields and vineyards. At a more leisurely pace, we squeezed through the narrow, medieval streets of Urbino and Spoleto. Locals, tourists and pigeons alike quickly scattered! Roma beckons; are the Vatican and St Peter’s Square ready for us?”
Team Mazda
“We were topless all day! We had a great time. San Marino was wow wow wow, when we got there after heavy traffic, road works and traffic lights. We took our time to get to Spoleto exploring the route on the way.”
Team Honda
“Today was the best day yet! We visited San Marino, sweated up and down hills in our leathers and ate a gelato. The road between San Marino and Urbino was fabulous. Beautiful scenery, great road surface, lots of lovely bends and no cars. Had a great pizza in Urbino, followed by a leisurely thrash to Spoleto. It was the perfect weather for biking.”
Team BEN
“Mike aka (Judy) sought revenge for our antics the previous day by arranging a 5:00am wake up call for us (score 2:2) – thanks Mike. Later in the day we managed to reunite our new Fiat 500 with an old acquaintance. We opted for a new team colour today and recruited another member; little did he know it was going to be pink (score 3:2 to BEN).”
Team Benfield
“The grand old dame (the car celebrated its 20th birthday recently and passed 155,000 miles during the course of the day) has started to suffer a little in the heat. We called the AA in San Marino for sunroof failure. Very embarrassed when they turned up and the roof closed first time. Some squeaks and squeals as we navigated the winding country roads between San Marino and Urbino straightening out some of the S-bends as we went. Sublime scenery!
We’re staying in what amounts to a modern art gallery this evening just outside the city walls of beautiful Spoleto – a really fun place!”
Team Anglia
“What a great drive it was from Rimini to San Marino, good weather, twisting roads and the Anglia purring along like a well oiled watch. We parked close to the castle and climbed flight upon flight of steps to where the cable car docks. The views were stunning so we decided to stay on for a couple of hours to take in all the sights. The drive down to Urbino was more like a white knuckle ride in places. A few kilometres before Urbino we caught up with the rest of the crew and tagged on to the convoy.”
Team AA
“We left Rimini in good time, except for Andy who was running a bit late. We’re not sure why, but the way he was running to the toilet we guessed he might have left his wallet in there. Kevin was at the wheel of the Landrover today, which shocked many locals as they could not see a driver until Tony passed over the booster cushion. The scenery was spectacular today, and the very tight bends and uneven road surfaces made interesting riding for Sean and Nick on the bikes. Brian and John in the Minivan wore their wigs for the last hour of the journey – the reasons for this are lost on the rest of us. Along the way we met a few AA members who wished us well on our journey. Tony and Kevin got straight to work on the Landrover and Ford Anglia when we arrived at the hotel, making a few checks in preparation for tomorrow.”
